Tribute to Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is celebrated in the UK and the Commonwealth on the Sunday nearest to Armistice day. Armistice day is the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War and the 2 minute silence which represents the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. This year’s Remembrance Sunday is on 13th November. Remembrance Day is held every year "to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts".

Every year ceremonies in cities, town and villages across the nation are attended by ex-servicemen and women, cadets, local armed forces and youth groups such as guides and scouts. Wreaths of poppies are laid on the memorials.

A national ceremony is held in London at the Cenotaph war memorial. There is a 2 minutes silence at 11am before the laying of the wreaths. The beginning and end of the silence is marked by gunfire on horse Guards Brigade, the Royal Marine buglers sounding Last Post, then the RAF buglers sounding Rouse.  The first Wreath is laid by the queen then the senior members of the Royal family place wreaths. Followed by the prime minister, political party leaders, Foreign Secretary; Commonwealth High Commissioners, and the Irish Ambassador and representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets and lastly the civilian emergency services.

In the weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday poppies are sold to raise money for all past and current members of the British militarily. Poppies are used as a symbol of remembrance, the use of them was inspired by the poem 'In Flanders Fields'. In tribute to the poem Moina Michael vowed to wear a poppy to remember those that fought in the war. She wore a silk poppy to a YWCA secretaries meeting and gave one to 25 others, she then campaigned to make the poppy a national symbol of remembrance. In 1920 The National American Legion adopted it as their official symbol of remembrance and Anna E. Guérin was inspired to make the artificial poppies used today and then in 1921 sent her poppy sellers to London where they were adopted by the founder of the Royal British Legion.

How to dress for work - Autumn edit

As the days start to get darker and more gloomy and with Christmas looming everyone could do with a pick me up. So why not cheer yourself up with some new stylish additions to your wardrobe. A new accessory can transform last years clothing into new on trend outfits. Check patterns have become the new stripes, neckerchiefs are more popular than ever and 70's style is creeping back. Duffel coats are the height of fashion, velvet is making a come back and metallic fabrics are all the rage. Especially prominent colours of the moment are sky blue and a variety of red and pinks.

Outfit Inspiration

If you are looking for some inspiration on what to wear to work this Autumn look no further. Here are some suggestions from us at on how to follow this seasons fashion trends at work.

A great alternative to a neckerchief is a cravat. They give off the same casual yet debonair feel but can also be slightly more formal, making them perfect for a work environment. This Van Buck Tiny Paisley Navy and Red Patterned Cravat would be the perfect addition to your office wear and the colours are very fashionable this season. You can see our collection of casual cravats here: and our plain self tie cravats here:

Combine two integral styles by adding a hint of pink and check pattern to your outfit with this Van Buck Dress Stewart Tartan Tie. Wear it with a white shirt and some dark navy blue brushed cotton trousers for a smart casual office look.

Wear our Plain Sky Blue Cotton Bow Tie by Knightsbridge with a black velvet dinner jacket, a white shirt and some black trousers for a very dapper look.

This Plain Platinum Slim Tie  is made from satin polyester so has a metallic effect. It would look great with a pair of our Plain Black Trouser Braces, a pale blue shirt, some black trousers and a black duffel coat.

Ties in Movies

Movies can be a great showcase of fashion over time. They can show us how trends have changed throughout the years and can give us some great outfit inspiration. Actors costumes are inspired and influenced by the fashions of the era and the place in which a film is set. Films can have a huge influence on fashion trends, bringing old styles back into popularity or creating brand new ones. We have picked out some ties from movies that we think look great.

In the classic crime drama hit Pulp fiction the gangsters John Vega and Jules Winnfield always look smart in their black suit and ties.

Kingsman: The Secret service features some quirky and dapper outfits with eye catching ties. The characters look very smart in a variety of pattern and plain ties.

The new Harry Potter prequel Fantastic beasts and Where to Find Them is set in 1926 New York and showcases old fashioned clothes and accessories. The star Eddie Redmayne wears an interesting thin stripe patterned bow tie.

The Wolf of Wall Street set in the late 80’s early 90’s features a lot of smart office style outfits seeing as it is all about the stock market. It displays some fantastic ties from that era.

The physiological thriller Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio  is a great example of 1950’s fashion.

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie is a very successful film and features a lot of smart, sophisticated fashion. This grey silk tie featured in the film has attracted a lot of attention and become a very popular tie.

You can buy a Van Buck Fifty Shades Of Grey Platinum Silk Tie here at

Suicide Squad is one of the most recent DC comic book films. In several scenes of the movie Jared Leto who plays the Joker wears a white bow tie as a part of a black tie outfit.

In the classic romantic comedy Pretty Woman Richard Gere plays a successful and wealthy business man who hires Julia Roberts to escort him to important events.
